Fugue Island pt1

Posted by bbbrrr Jul. 25, 2009 @ 11:46 PM EDT

Ok, here's a short story I'm working on. It has little point, but quite a purpose. With the formalities out of the way...enjoy part one.

He groaned as he woke up, clutching his head. He blinked a few times, but the light hurt his eyes, and he couldn't bear to keep them open. Instead, he simply squinted as he sat up and tried to get a bearing of his surroundings. He soon realized, however, that he had no clue where on Earth he was. He fully opened his eyes to get a better picture, and found himself on a beautiful beach. In front of him was ocean, as far as his eyes could see. Turning his head, he could see palm trees at the edge of what seemed to be a forest, with more trees of differing varieties that he could not discern further back. "I must be on a tropical island," he thought to himself. He started to wonder about where this island might be, how large could it be, and, perhaps most importantly, if it is inhabited. "Maybe I can find my way home," he said aloud, but he stopped at the word home. He tried to think, to remember his home, but he could not recall where it was.

Upon further reflection, he realized he had no clue who he was either, or how he had gotten to this island. This shocked him, as he felt he was perfectly healthy. He had never had a past of psychological problems, so this random forgetfulness seemed out of place. "Maybe I have amnesia," he thought aloud. "No, that can't be right. I remember a lot, like our president, major issues and a couple of news stories...but then why can't I remember anything about myself, or how I got here?" He tried to think back, but he found nothing useful. He then remembered something he learned in psychology. "Dissociative fugue is similar to amnesia," he said, the voice of his psychology teacher echoing through his head. "They are both dissociative disorders that cause one to distance themselves from their problems. However, while amnesia causes one to forget most everything, fugue actually makes the person to travel away from their home somehow, and leaves them without memory of how they got there, or anything about their personal life - anything that may have caused the problem." He scoffed at himself and thought, "Sure, I can remember what I learned in school but nothing about my life..." He paused again, and then decided it best to get some rest and ponder more when he woke up.

He could tell he was in a dream. Everything felt different, and it seemed somewhat strange. Still, from what he could see, nothing was out of the ordinary. He seemed to be at some sort of restaurant, or at least he assumed he was. He was dressed in formal clothes. When he looked at himself more, he could tell a few more things about himself. He was in his late teens, and probably around his high school graduation. Most everyone else he could see was similarly dressed, and similarly aged as well. When he examined his table he found that the other people at the table were talking amongst each other. He took a moment and saw that there were six other people at the table: three of each sex. Next to him was a guy who seemed to be very nice, who apparently was named Brian. He looked tall and slightly pudgy, but also fairly athletic. Sitting next to him was a large girl, who seemed to be doing most of the talking on their half of the table.

Brain was attempting to quiet her, yet his efforts were fruitless. "Mary, I hate to say it, but no one wants to hear about your job," Brian told her. She refused to stop though. Next to Mary was an empty seat - he could easily see why. On the other side of the empty seat was another girl, wrapped around the arm of the guy next to her. He seemed fully absorbed in everything she was saying, and didn't care much for anyone else. He overheard their names as Jessie and Peter when the man next to Peter spoke to them. Peter was short and fairly fat. He also looked to be Latin, but a name like Peter betrayed that idea. Jessie was about as tall as him, and fairly slim. The third man, whom Brian had called Nick, was about the size of Brian, except obviously larger and less athletic. The last person at the table, a woman, caught his attention and held it as soon as she was in his sight. She was pretty, but not beautiful per say, and yet she was the most attractive woman he had ever laid eyes on. He could tell that she was important to him somehow, and perhaps there had been a relationship between them once. However, since she had empty chairs on both sides of her, he felt that there was nothing actually between them at the moment. Seeing as no one spoke with her, he never heard her name.

Suddenly and without warning he spoke. As he did so, he realized he no longer had control - the dream had gone into autopilot. He listened to what he had to say. "I'd love to go to the party with you, but you know someone stole my invite. Can anyone vouch for me and say that I belong there?"
"You know I would," the unamed girl said, speaking first, "but I've gotten into so much trouble...you know they wouldn't believe me."
"She has a point," Brain said. "I don't see why you even want to go. You said yourself that you wouldn't enjoy it. In fact, you're the reason I'm not going, and thusly the reason I can't vouch for you."
"I'll back you up. In fact, we can take you there," Peter offered.
"Are you sure?" he grimaced. Nick saw exactly what he meant.
"I can provide backup if needbe," Nick said, putting his concerns at ease.
"Ok. I'll call you if Peter falls through..." Peter shot him a look, then shrugged as his concentration sank back into his armcandy. Mary snickered and went back to chatting with Brian, while he payed little attention. Nick looked around, then left the table to go after a girl who had been giving Nick some coy looks. With everyone's attention elsewhere, he looked back at the unamed girl as she stared off at what seemed to be nothing. He wondered slightly about her and seemed entranced by her presence, but when he saw her head starting to turn, he snapped out of it and just looked ahead. He closed his eyes and began to think.

NOTE: I've got more than just this written, but it splits nicely here...

You may want to watch the "brian" and "brain" thing if you continue there were a couple spots where they were switched... Not to be a stickler...

You pretty much nailed the personalities of the source characters dead on.

Also, there could be more character development, unless there is more elsewhere. When describing Peter did you mean Latin like Vergil, or Latino/Hispanic?

Just for the record, I placed the characters at the FL Taco Bell at the surfboard table because that is how I imagined the setting...
